Frequently asked questions
When should I see a cardiologist?
You may be referred to a cardiologist if you experience symptoms such as:
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Shortness of breath
• Palpitations
• Dizziness or fainting
• High blood pressure
• Abnormal ECG results
Do I need a referral to see a cardiologist?
Yes. A referral from your GP or another specialist is required to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring:
• Your GP referral letter
• Medicare card and identification
• A list of your current medications
• Any previous cardiac test results (ECGs, scans, reports if available)
What happens during the first consultation?
Your cardiologist will review your medical history, symptoms, medications, and risk factors. A physical examination may be performed, and if needed, further cardiac tests or investigations may be recommended.
What cardiac tests may be required?
Depending on your symptoms, you may require tests such as:
• Echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart)
• Stress echocardiography
• Holter monitoring (heart rhythm monitoring)
• Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
• Cardiac CT scans such as CT coronary angiography or calcium scoring
How long does the appointment take?
Initial consultations typically take 30–45 minutes, allowing time for a thorough assessment and discussion of your symptoms and treatment options.
Will my GP receive the results?
Yes. A detailed report will be sent to your referring GP so they remain fully informed and involved in your ongoing care.
Are telehealth consultations available?
Yes. Telehealth appointments may be available for suitable patients, particularly for follow-up consultations or when travel to the clinic is difficult.
How do I book an appointment?
Appointments can be arranged by calling the clinic directly or through a referral from your GP.
